Ang Trapeang Thmor - Sarus Crane Reserve

The Sarus Crane Feeding Researve

Ang Trapeang Thmor (ATT) is one of the top bird watching sites close to Siem Reap. It is the feeding ground for the Sarus Crane (Grus Antigone) in the dry season. About 200 bird species have been spotted at the reserve, these include the Spotted Wood-owl, Oriental Plover, Greater Spotted Eagle, Comb Duck, Black Kite, Milky Stork, Painted Stork and the Black-necked Stork. It is also a natural habitat for the Eld’s Deer.

Ang Trapeang Thmor Protected Landscape was created by Royal Decree in the year 2000 covers an area of 12,650 hectares of wetlands, grassland, dry dipterocarp forest, bamboo forest, and the open water surface.

  • See the huge man-made reservoir and ancient bridge from the Angkor era.
  • Meet Cambodian locals while they are working fishing in their communities. Talk with them about their lives and about conservation.
  • Meet silk weavers at a local village, whose products can often be bought direct.
  • Enjoy a Cambodian lunch, prepared at the community restaurant – Sambour.

Typical Itinerary for a full day birding trip to Ang Trapeang Thmor from Siem Reap

  • 5.30am CBGA bird guide and driver in A/C 4WD car will pick you up from your Siem Reap hotel. We will spend about 2 hours driving on a 110km northwest from Siem Reap toward Ang Trapeang Thmor. A few stops on the way spotting good birds and enjoy breakfast packed from Siem Reap.
  • 8.30am arrive at ATT, pick up the local guide and ranger then explore the area for Sarus Crane, Eld’s Deer, Waterfowls, Harriers, Owls, and Storks.
  • 11.30am go back to the village for lunch.
  • 12.00pm have lunch at Sambour Community Restaurant.
  • 1.30pm visit the local silk weaving village where you might want to buy their final product. The group can also continue more birding before heading back to Siem Reap.
  • 5.00pm arrival in Siem Reap

  • The best time to see the Sarus Crane is from January to May, however, an abundance of bird species makes it a worthwhile birding site all year round.
  • Our expert guide with our driver will pick you up from your hotel lobby at 5.30am toward Ang Trapeang Thmor, as early as we can so we get the most of the morning time which is best for the birds and nature. We will arrive back in Siem Reap around 5 pm or early or later depends on your interest in the tour.  We can either take you back to your hotel or to another destination of your choice in town.
  • Breakfast is provided by CBGA with a croissant, two slides of cereal bread with butter and jam, some fresh fruit, and coffee or tea. Please do if you may wanna pack breakfast also from your hotel.
  • Other things to bring: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
  • CBGA will provide drinking water in a big container to refill, so we request you to bring your own water bottle from home or from your hotel. It is our campaign to reduce plastic waste.
