Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary

Prek Toal bird sanctuary is located at the northwest corner of the Tonle Sap Great Lake, within the Tonle Sap UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, largest waterbird colonies in Southeast Asia.  This stunning Ramsar site and the largest waterbird colonies in Southeast Asia covered mostly by seasonally inundated freshwater swamp forest, is home to the rare waterbirds in the dry season.

Beside bird-watching in the core reserve, Prek Toal offers spectacular experiences with the viewing of the flooded forest, floating village, and the Great Tonle Sap itself.

Species:

Bird species including the global significant Spot-billed Pelican, Milky Stork, Painted Stork, Lesser Adjutant, Greater Adjutant, Black-headed Ibis, Oriental Darter, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, cormorants, over 150 species, have been recorded in this protected reserve.

Accommodation:

Overnight stay at the floating house managed by the local community – Saray.

All the houses are furnished with mat, mattress, pillow, blanket and mosquito net.

Tour:

A trip to Prek Tol can be enjoyed with a day trip from Siem Reap or with an overnight trip from Siem Reap staying in a floating house homestay hosted by the local community, and exploring the core reserve very early. Being the first before other tourists arrive.

The best time to explore Prek Toal bird colonies is from November when most bird species are coming. Yet some species like Milky Stork and Greater Adjutant will get there later in December, and until the end of May when the rain comes and birds are leaving. The access to the bird colonies inside the core reserve also plays an important factor for visitors. By late February the water level is getting low which not allow us to get through to the observation platform. Fortunately, without being at the platform where it is very muddy and our boat could not access, we are still able to enjoy the area with the finding of many bird species in flocks gathering along the waterways where they come to feed.
