Identification: 152 – 156 cm

Adults: Huge, grey with naked red head and upper neck (brighter when breeding), long bill and reddish legs. Blackish flight.

Juveniles: have feathered buffish head and upper neck and duller plumage with brownish feather fringes.

Habitat: shallow wetlands, rice fields and wet grasslands, open country; up to 1,000 m.

Ecology: pairs perform dancing courtship display, which includes wing-spreading, bowing, head-lowering and leaps into air.

Conservation status: Vulnerable
