About 70km from Stung Treng town, Srae Chhouk/Srae Pdao located in the eastern wildlife corridor of Cambodia next to Sambo Wildlife Sanctuary, is one of the remaining Deciduous Dipterocarp Forests (DDF) under the protection of the forest community without any financial support. It is one of the 5 operating vulture restaurant sites, and the forest is well preserved under the management of an indigenous group, namely the Bunong, known as mountain tribe.

Target birds at Srae Chhouk are: Giant Ibis, White-shouldered Ibis, 3 resident vultures (Red-headed Vulture, White-rumped Vulture, Slender-billed Vulture), and many other species of woodpeckers. This beautiful forest lays along the Mekong River and its tributaries hosting many rarities of the world.

Srae Chhouk Tour

By bringing in ecotourism to this site, CBGA is supporting the protection of the forest and community livelihood along with training the community members in providing services. The facility of this site is still basic e.g., sleeping in tented camp with mattress, no AC but DC fan, no proper restaurant but cooking by trained community members, no hot water as installed in hotel, limited electricity for charging your battery but all visitors who choose to go to this site is because of they want to involvement in conserving the last remaining natural habitats in eastern part of Cambodia and supporting the green growth policy.

Following is the sample itinerary for a 3 day 2 night trip to Srae Chhouk:

Day 1: Arrival at Srae Chhouk & Afternoon Birding

Arrival at Srae Chhouk village, meeting your local Bunong community guides and settle into the eco-tented camp in the afternoon before birding walk through the Deciduous Dipterocarp Forest searching for White-shouldered Ibis roosts and woodpecker species along the Mekong tributaries.

Day 2: Giant Ibis Exploration

Early morning position at the Giant Ibis hide to see and photograph this global Critically Endangered Species. Mid-day break and community lunch prepared by trained local cooks. Afternoon excursion to key foraging sites for other DDF species e.g. Woodpeckers, Falcon and Falconet etc. and evening roosting calls. Overnight in tented camp.

Day 3: Morning Birding & Transfer Onward

We will spend our morning on the last birding walk for Srae Chhouk. Then after breakfast, we will thank our local community host team and transfer back to town or continue on to your next destination.
