Sambovannak “Johnny” Orn is a prominent Cambodian conservationist, sustainable tourism developer, and veteran birding guide based in Siem Reap. With over two decades of experience in the field, Johnny has been instrumental in positioning Cambodia as a premier international destination for specialized birdwatching and eco-conscious travel.
Early Life & Heritage
Born in Battambang province during the Khmer Rouge era, Johnny spent his early childhood in a refugee camp before returning to Cambodia in 1991. He began his professional career in education as an English teacher (2003–2005) and a licensed temple guide in Siem Reap before turning his passion full-time toward wildlife protection in 2009.
Conservation Leadership & Impact
Johnny joined the Sam Veasna Center (SVC) as a professional bird guide in 2009. Demonstrating exceptional field leadership and stakeholder engagement, he was promoted to Program and Stakeholder Manager in 2011 and served as Executive Director from April 2012 to November 2016.
Driven to expand sustainable tourism benefits directly to local communities, Johnny co-founded the Cambodia Bird Guide Association (CBGA). His career is deeply rooted in Community-Based Ecotourism (CBET) and protected area management, working directly with rural communities surrounding Cambodia’s vital sanctuaries—including Prek Toal Core Reserve, the Northern Plains, Ang Trapeang Thmor, and Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary. By training local villagers, former hunters, and forest stewards as professional wildlife guides, his initiatives directly transform biodiversity conservation into sustainable household income.
As President of CBGA, Johnny oversees organizational strategy, guide certification, and international tour operations targeting rare and critically endangered species such as the Giant Ibis, White-shouldered Ibis, Bengal Florican, and Sarus Crane.
